Announcements
Parking Reminder/Request

If you work for a local company which does not have reserved parking for employees, please consider not parking directly in front of your place of business. Oftentimes these spaces are open because you arrive before the start of business. However, these spaces are better left available for the people who patronize your establishments throughout the day...you could be inadvertently costing your company business by not giving your customers a place park nearby. While this issue applies throughout our business community, it is particulary hard for customers to find spots on Brownsville Road in the area of Brentwood Towne Square. Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated by the BBOA and your paying customers.

JOIN TODAY AND YOUR BUSINESS WILL APPEAR HERE !!

RESIDENT MEMBER PROGRAM

The BBOA announces its first Resident Member, Jack Hartman. Jack, a long time Brentwood resident, brings a new perspective of the borough's issues and concerns to the BBOA. Jack's first order of business was announcing that the BBOA will be the Grand Marshall's of the 2008 Brentwood 4th of July Parade. We welcome Jack and hope that he is the first of many residents to join the organization.

Sponsor a BBOA Mailing

The BBOA is introducing an innovative idea to reduce the organization's mailing costs while at the same time allowing a member business to take advantage of a relatively inexpensive way to advertise to the BBOA business community. By sponsoring a BBOA mailing, your 8 X 10 ad will accompany the BBOA flyer. Describe your business, announce a special, or print a page of coupons. Contact BBOA President Denny Flanigan for information on fees and the upcoming schedule. Businesses are already lining up, so get your request in soon!

Membership Plaques

This year the BBOA started a Membership Plaque Program. This plaque is a great identifying symbol that recognizes you as a current member of the BBOA, and that your business or organization is involved with promoting business in our fine community. The plaque is a symbol of UNITY and "What's Right With Brentwood". Each year we will be sending out a new insert that will replace the previous one. We believe the by displaying this plaque at your place of business, you will be letting your patrons know that you are a part of an organization that is dedicated to encouraging and promoting business in the Brentwood area.

Please contact Rita Day at 412-885-4868x104 or rrday@gbaco.com if you have not received a plaque and would like one mailed to your business or organization.

Economic Development South (EDS) - January 2012 Update

For our January update, I wanted to talk some about EDS's approach to redeveloping our communities.

EDS has taken a corridor-based approach to redeveloping the area --- both as means to attract new businesses and residents, and as a strategy for maximizing the impact of our projects and initiatives. This approach is based on the principle that our communities share a common interest in the long-term economic vitality of the commercial corridors that link our neighborhoods to the rest of the region.

Based on this strategy, EDS has been reaching out to all of the communities that share an interest in the redevelopment of our commercial corridors. And these efforts have started to bear fruit, because this month we are excited to announce that the communities of Overbrook and Carrick will be participating in EDS as formal partners. We hope that this will allow us to make more of an impact on some of the key areas of Route 51 (such as the intersection of Routes 51 and 88 in Overbrook) and Brownsville Road (such as the Sankey Avenue Business District that straddles Carrick and Brentwood). The redevelopment of these areas would have a profound impact on the attractiveness of the EDS communities to new businesses and residents.

As EDS continues to grow and support the redevelopment of our communities, we hope that we will be able to engage more communities around common priorities and shared interests. This growth will allow us to make a comprehensive impact to our commercial corridors and will allow us to be more competitive for scarce regional and state redevelopment resources.

I'd love feedback from you, please call /email me and we can meet to talk more about EDS.

Have a happy holiday everyone!

BBOA Brentwood Community Night at PNC Park & Guy Buzzelli Memorial Tailgate Party
Tuesday, June 21, 2011

HERO (hee - ro) noun: a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his deeds, noble qualities and inspiration to others. See Guy Buzzelli

Guy Buzzelli (1963-2009), who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy when he was 9, worked closely with the Muscular Dystrophy Association since 2005. In recognition, MDA, at the 2007 Muscle Team gathering, awarded him the inaugural Guy Buzzelli Jr. Champion of Spirit Award for "making an astounding difference in the Pittsburgh community while spreading awareness of neuromuscular disorders." The award named in Buzzelli's honor is presented annually to people who exemplify the same spirit and drive he demonstrates.

For the past 20 years, he has also sold tickets for the Pittsburgh Pirates as a member of the Gold Club, a group of volunteers who receive incentives based on their sales. Guy, who retired from the Port Authority, worked from home for the Pirates. In 2006, he became the first Gold Club member to reach the $2 million mark in ticket sales. He was rewarded with trips to Wrigley Field in Chicago and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Pirates' spring training and five All-Star Games. Guy was instrumental in the success of our annual BBOA Brentwood Community Night at PNC Park.

"Since I was 9 years old, a dream of mine was to one day play for the Pirates," Guy once said. "This is like the next best thing." We find comfort in believing that Guy is now in Heaven fulfilling his dream on the diamond as a member of the greatest All Star team the Lord has ever assembled.

BBOA Light Up Night 2007

However, there were plenty of lights and sounds to put the community in the right mood to kick off the season. Thanks to all who attended, including that little old man from the North Pole, Santa Claus himself!

Now that the holiday shopping season is upon us, please remember to patronize your local merchants when you are looking for gift ideas. All of the BBOA member businesses listed to the right are ready to offer you great products and services now and throughout the new year.

BRENTWOOD COMMUNITY NIGHT AT PNC PARK 2007
WEDNESDAY JUNE 13, 2007
PIRATES vs. THE TEXAS RANGERS

Event organizer and BBOA Secretary to the Organization Brian Graham would like to thank his fellow organizers, BBOA members, business sponsors, and community members who helped make this year's tailgate party and baseball game another success. The weather started off great and everyone enjoyed plenty of food, refreshments, and entertainment...And then came the big storm. Luckily the rain arrived just as the tailgate party was winding down, so aside from running between the raindrops to get on the buses, the storm just served to cool things down and provide for a beautiful evening of baseball. The Bucs won the game 8-1 to end the night on a positive note. Click on any of the thumbnails above to view pictures from the event---see if you can find yourself at the tailgate party or ballgame!

THE BBOA WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE FOLLOWING FOR ONCE AGAIN MAKING THIS EVENT A GREAT SUCCESS: GUY BUZZELLI, OUR LIAISON TO THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES. GUY COORDINATES OUR EVENT WITH THE TEAM. SPRING FLING 2007
Live Longer & Healthier..Volunteer for a Committee
Want to find the Fountain of Youth? You can!

According to Prevention Magazine, people who volunteer stay healthier and live longer than people who dont. VOLUNTEERING KEEPS YOU IN SHAPE. A recent Johns Hopkins University study found that spending 15 hours a week in an elementary school DOUBLES the number of calories you burn in a year. PITCHING IN MAKES YOU HAPPIER. Volunteers report more satisfaction with their lives, higher levels of self-esteem, and lower levels of depression. VOLUNTEERING BUILDS BRAIN POWER. In another John Hopkins study, people who volunteered cut their risk of Alzheimers disease in HALF!

Improve your health while improving the health of your community... volunteer for a committee. Read on for information about 2007 BBOA events and committees. Click here for more information on volunteering and your health.
