INTRODUCTION |
|
| |
|
For a quiet, suburban hometown, Baldwin Borough (formerly Baldwin Township) sure
has some fascinating stories to tell.
Little is known about our area in the years prior to the American Revolution, except to
say it was replete with beautiful trees, temperate seasons and plush valleys. But once
"discovered" by early pioneers, the locale's accessible waterways,
sylvan hills and vast natural resources quickly drew the interests of a parade of immigrants,
explorers and opportunists.
As the nation grew in population, villages developed throughout the considerable 10,446 acres of western
Pennsylvania known as Baldwin Township. Originally formed in February 1844, from land that had
been part of St. Clair, Jefferson and Mifflin townships, Baldwin Township was named for Henry Baldwin, a
prominent Pittsburgh attorney, congressman and U.S. Supreme Court Justice who had died that year.
In its formative years, the Township predominantly attracted Scotts, Irish and German settlers who came to
farm or mine coal and other minerals from the rich land. Later, many noteworthy residents of Baldwin
Township - leaders of industry, commerce and government - would play a prominent role in bringing acclaim to
Over the years, local municipalities within the sprawling Township - communities such as Hays, Carrick,
Brentwood, Whitehall, Overbrook, Castle Shannon and other parts of the City of Pittsburgh - sought their independence
or the benefits of being a part of the city and broke away from Baldwin Township. Finally, on October 27, 1950,
Baldwin Borough was formed when, from his sickbed, Judge Thomas Marshall signed a court order creating it.
The following pages offer you a glimpse at some of the people, events and businesses that convey our past and
form our collective heritage. Whether you recognize a name, learn some interesting trivia or simply come along for
a ride through time, we hope you enjoy this chronicle of people and events that have helped to shape Baldwin
Borough into what it is today.
